ZOOLOGY

Zoology is one of the branches of pure sciences dealing with the studies of animal
kingdom. It encompasses various areas such as taxonomy, developmental biology,
genetics, physiology, evolution, ecology, biochemistry, as well as applied biology
disciplines like biotechnology, bioinformatics, forensic science, and many others. The
subject can be studied through various innovative ways such as experiential learning,
problem-based learning, collaborative learning in addition to the traditional mode of
learning.

About the Department

Zoology department was started in 1952. The department encourages students to
actively participate in various academic as well as co-curricular and outreach activities.
To enhance experiential learning, the department organizes field trips and nature walks
to the national parks, local zoo and aquarium. It incorporates interactive teaching-
learning methodologies including ICT. The department has spacious laboratory and
infrastructure for research studies. Both the staff members are recognized by University
of Mumbai for Postgraduate teaching for Animal Physiology specialization. Zoology
department is also recognized for Ph.D. and currently six research scholars are
pursuing their doctoral thesis in the area of toxicology. It is an ongoing endeavor of the
department to make the subject enjoyable and interesting to study.

Dr. Roshan D'Souza

With the teaching experience of over 30 years at undergraduate level and over 20 years at postgraduate level including Ph.D. guideship, she has also carried out administrative responsibilities as the Vice-Principal of Science faculty from the year 2010–2016 and as the Coordinator of B.Sc.I.T. (Self-financed degree course) from 2013-2017. She has been awarded the prestigious Indian National Science Academies (INSA) Teachers Award 2021, a national level recognition for her outstanding contribution in guiding and mentoring students to take up careers in science, striving to make zoology interesting and for her efforts in engaging undergraduate students in science research and outreach activities. She is trained in research-based pedagogy and has been a resource person for teacher training workshops held all over India, organized by IISER, Pune and Newton-Bhabha Fund, British Council. Currently, she is on the advisory committee of Maharashtra State Development of Educators and Enhancement in Delivery (MS- DEED) Program in collaboration with Maharashtra State Faculty Development Academy (MSFDA) and has been a resource person for conducting sessions in inquiry-based pedagogy and its action planning for the higher education teachers from different regions of Maharashtra State. She is actively involved in promoting online learning through SWAYAM as a Single Point of Contact of Sophia-NPTEL Local Chapter. She has developed two MOOCs, namely, Scientific Research Methodology and Scientific Research Communication under the UNESCO-OE4BW Online Mentoring Program. She has co-authored seven zoology textbooks published by University of Mumbai. Her research expertise is in the field of toxicology and reproductive physiology and is currently guiding six research scholars for their doctoral thesis. She also guides students under Science Academies’ Summer Research Fellowship Program. She is the Chairperson of Institutional Animal Ethics Committee under the CCSEA, India. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and has published papers in journals of national and international repute. She has been awarded Major Research Grant under the aegis of The Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), Department of Higher Education, Government of India in the year 2020.

Ms. Sandhya Kadiru

MSc. Assistant Professor in Zoology

She has been teaching for the past 19 years at the undergraduate level and has been a recognized teacher at postgraduate level since 2013. She is a member of DBT-STAR Status and Excellence in Science Programme (EXSP) committee. She has been mentoring EXSP students in their research activities. Her area of interest is ecotoxicology and has expertise in using zebrafish as a model animal. She has also published papers in this field.
